Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Brandon Nimmo will go through “a day or two” of baseball activity before returning to the team’s lineup. Mendoza said Nimmo could be the team’s designated hitter later this week. Nimmo began baseball activity Monday after receiving a gel injection to relieve his knee soreness over the weekend.

Griffin Canning struck out five over 3 2/3 shutout innings, and Luis Torrens, Juan Soto, and Mark Vientos all hit homers as the Mets beat the Cardinals, 8-0. Soto now has a 1.556 OPS in Grapefruit League play, and Vientos has homered in consecutive games.

The Mets head to West Palm Beach to take on the Astros this afternoon. Tylor Megill (0-1, 3.38 ERA) will face off against Hunter Brown (1-0, 4.15 ERA). Hard-throwing righty Nolan McLean is also expected to pitch today after Megill. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.

Francisco Alvarez‘s surgery to repair a fractured hamate bone went “as expected”, the team said Monday. Alvarez is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Dedniel Núñez threw live batting practice on Monday, his first time facing live hitters in camp. The Mets still believe Núñez will be ready for Opening Day. The right-hander had his breakout season cut short in 2024 by a flexor strain.

The Mets are releasing a documentary about the team’s negotiations with Juan Soto called “The Pursuit“. The film will be released on the Mets’ YouTube channel on March 14.

MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said the association appreciates the Mets’ commitment to winning and putting together the best team they can field. Clark added that he wishes there were a greater commitment to winning across the league.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that they will play three games as the Southern Tier Spicy Meatballs from August 14-16. The name is inspired by the Italian heritage in New York’s Southern Tier region, specifically in Endicott.

The Yankees announced Monday that 2023 Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles today. Cole had testing done on his elbow after he felt discomfort last week and said he was concerned about what the imaging would show.

The Dodgers have agreed to a four-year extension with manager Dave Roberts, worth slightly more than $8 million, a new record for average annual salary for a manager. In his nine years at the helm in Los Angeles, Roberts has a .627 winning percentage to with four National League pennants and two World Series rings.

Two-time All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal recently turned down a contract from the Braves, Francys Romero reported. Grandal is still hoping for an opportunity, but may consider retirement. The 36-year-old spent 2024 with the Pirates, batting .228/.304/.400 with nine homers in 243 plate appearances.

Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm said that an impingement in his throwing shoulder has caused inflammation, but an MRI didn’t reveal any structural damage. He won’t throw until at least Thursday, when he will be examined by a team doctor. Strahm isn’t sure if he will be ready for Opening Day.
