The Rule Changes Are Producing Their Desired Effects

2006: The Mets won an exciting and back-and-forth game against the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. Despite starting with a what looked like a certain Yankees win due to Randy Johnson pitching, the Mets’ Geremi Gonzalez struggled early on, allowing six runs. However, the Mets fought back with home runs from Carlos Beltran and Xavier Nady, tying the game at 6-6. The score remained unchanged until the ninth inning. Mets closer Billy Wagner dominated the Yankees’ lineup with three consecutive strikeouts. In the bottom of the ninth, David Wright delivered a walk-off single, securing a 7-6 win for the Mets. It was a notable victory for the Mets, as Mariano Rivera, the Yankees’ star closer, couldn’t seal the deal for the first time in seven years.
