Triple-A: Syracuse (17-25) 4, Norfolk (30-11) 2 Box Score

Carlos Cortes had an encouraging game after starting the season on the injured list and Danny Mendick put up a multi-hit performance. Gary Sanchez added a hit and kept his average above .300 and his OPS above 1.000. The veteran catcher is joining the major league roster on Friday.

Ronny Mauricio went 0-for-4 and had his third error of the week at second base. However, he did walk and is still beckoning for a call-up along with the rest of the Mets faithful.

  • RHP Denyi Reyes (5.06 ERA) 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
  • LHP T.J. McFarland (2.25 ERA) 2.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Tony Dibrell (10.04 ERA) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Items to note before diving into the point of gossip of the evening are that Tony Dibrell made his season debut in the back end of the bullpen, seemingly taking a step forward after a rough showing as a starter. He tallied a save and struck two out in a scoreless inning. Denyi Reyes had a solid start by allowing just two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

For the second straight game, the Syracuse Mets had a pitcher ejected for a foreign substance found on his glove prior to entering the game. Dylan Bundy was ejected yesterday in the middle of his outing, but Orze didn’t even get to enter the game. Now while theories aren’t as significant as facts, it’s worth noting that there are rosin bags in the bullpen as well as on the game mound, and, typically, pitchers put the rosin on their arms as opposed to their gloves. Therefore, it’s unlikely that Orze was tossed simply for having rosin on his glove, despite his protests to the umpire. He will serve a ten-game suspension immediately.

Double-A: Binghamton (16-19) 8, New Hampshire (18-17) 2 Box Score

Both Matt Rudick and Jose Peroza continued their hot streaks, as Rudick is on pace for a season with impressive power production. Binghamton led from the second inning and scored three in the eighth off a good reliever in Luis Quinones. Rowdey Jordan also had a multi-hit day that saw seven of the starting nine tally a base knock.

Bold Prediction: Mike Vasil is the next Mets starting pitcher to make his MLB debut. He has been nothing short of dominant in recent weeks and continued the trend on Thursday night against an impressive New Hampshire lineup. He has only walked six hitters in 37 innings and allowed a mere 20 hits to go along with it, paving the way for an elite WHIP that hovers around 0.67. His track record thus far of stress-free innings and reliability would hardly be a risky move by Billy Eppler to call up to Queens. While it isn’t the Mets style to pull pitchers from Double-A, Vasil has proven himself between spring training and the start of the season that he belongs in Queens sooner rather than later.

Kyle Wilson threw a scoreless inning to hold the lead and remains an interesting example of pitchers receiving extended chances due to higher signing bonuses. In his case, he used his rehab time to his advantage, and his repertoire is surprisingly good at this juncture. He will be a pitcher to watch going forward with a high-ride four-seam, good hard curveball, and slider with MLB velocity.

High-A: Brooklyn (13-20) 6, Hudson Valley (22-14) 1 Box Score

Alex Ramírez had a perfect night at the plate and Mateo Gil provided the power to push Brooklyn past a strong Hudson Valley team. Gil has had a rough first part of the season, but Thursday’s game was a moment of hope for him, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning to extend the lead from 2-1 to the final score of 6-1.

  • RHP Cam Foster (4.78 ERA) 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Manny Rodríguez (2.95 ERA) 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Wilkin Ramos (1.42 ERA) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

The Brooklyn pitching staff had a fantastic day against Hudson Valley. Cam Foster had a big step forward, lowering his season ERA below five after it started at 6.14 entering the evening. Foster’s high-ride fastball, big CB, and ‘slutter’ were effective, but he likely needs to add more velocity in the long run despite good movement profiles. Manny Rodriguez continues to impress along with Wilkin Ramos, who, along with Trey McLoughlin, are leading the way for the Brooklyn bullpen.

Low-A: St. Lucie (6-18) 8, Jupiter (14-10) 3 Box Score (Top 3 – Suspended)

Saul Garcia started the game off with two scoreless innings pitched before the game was suspended and will be resumed on Friday. The game was tied 0-0.
