Astros general manager Dana Brown confirmed Sunday that Jose Altuve has a broken right thumb and will need to undergo surgery. Brown said there is no timetable for Altuve’s return. He suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch by Daniel Bard in the fifth inning of Team Venezuela’s quarterfinal game against the USA.

D.J. Stewart became the first player to hit for a cycle in spring training since 2020, but a four-run eighth inning by the Cardinals sunk the Mets, 8-7. Stewart is now batting .435 with a 1.364 OPS and 11 RBIs in Grapefruit League play. David Peterson started for the Mets and pitched four shutout innings, allowing one hit and four walks with four strikeouts. Tylor Megill struggled, however, allowing six hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. Justin Verlander will make his fourth start of the spring tonight against the Nationals in West Palm Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.

Brandon Nimmo said he’s optimistic about being able to play on opening day after suffering minor sprains to his knee and ankle on Friday. Nimmo is currently considered week-to-week.
