LATEST METS NEWS

Yesterday, Robert Gsellman put forth another good effort as he pitched six innings while allowing three runs on five hits in the team’s 3-3 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals. All three runs came off the bat of a homer by slugger, Matt Adams. Gsellman walked one on the day and struck out six on a day where Terry Collins made it all but official that he would be in the rotation. Overall this spring, the 23-year-old right hander has pitched to a 1-2 record with a 2.31 ERA in six games while pitching to a WHIP of 1.07. He has certainly proven that he is the real deal and should be a valuable piece of the puzzle going into 2017. Read more from Mike Puma in the NY Post.

Lucas Duda showed some more raw power in Tuesday’s game, mashing a three-run bomb off of Mets nemesis, Adam Wainwright. The home run was the third of the spring for Duda, who also has nine RBI. He has hit to a .244/.326/.585 batting line in the Grapefruit League and if healthy, he will provide great depth to the lineup with the ability to be a game changer. Duda struggled with injuries in 2016 but seems to be back in full force heading into this season. Read more from John Harper in the NYDN.

Matt Ehalt of NorthJersey.com takes a look at the roster decisions that the Mets face heading into opening day. Ehalt believes that the three biggest players the team has decisions to make on are Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler and Juan Lagares. Each provides their own domino effect. If Matz is unable to go, a spot in the rotation opens for either Wheeler or Seth Lugo. The team though may opt to keep Wheeler back in extended spring training to have him be more available at the end of the season due to an imposed innings cap. If Lagares is unable to go, Michael Conforto could head north with the team, acting as a back-up center fielder. All in all, the organization still has some important decisions to make with the start of the season just days away.
