Alvarez sustained the injury on April 19 when he appeared to jam his thumb rounding first base in a game against the Dodgers. Despite the injury, he still reached second base, sliding head first in the process.

The 22-year-old was hitting .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBIs in 16 games prior to the injury.
