Good morning and Happy Trade Deadline Day Mets fans!
There is a lot of speculation out there about what the Mets will do before the deadline and if they see themselves as contenders this year or not, but let’s focus on what we know.
Noah Syndergaard took the mound last night for, what could have been, the last start of his Mets career. The right-hander had yet another, brilliant outing throwing 7 1/3 innings of one (unearned) run baseball. His outing Tuesday night was one of his best outings of the season, striking out a season-high 11 batters and walked only one while giving up only five hits. The White Sox were no-hit through four innings and the Texas native looked dominant the entire night.
The Mets scored only two runs in the first nine innings of the game. The White Sox tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, but with bases loaded and one out in the inning were unable to score off, escape artist, Seth Lugo. The game continued on to extra innings and in the top of the 11th inning the Mets came out swinging. Amed Rosario got his fourth hit of the day to start the 11th.
With one out and a man on second in Rosario, Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer that just cleared the fence to give the Mets the lead. Michael Conforto, wasting no time after his teammate’s homer, hit home run number 20 out of sight and extended their lead to 5-2. Robert Gsellman came out for the bottom of the 11th to close it out and threw two sparkling innings to hold the Sox from scoring and the Mets won their fifth straight game. The team is now within four games of .500 baseball and five games out of a wild card spot.
Today, someone we know will be a Met after 4 p.m. today, Jacob deGrom (6-7, 2.86), will face off against Lucas Giolito (11-5, 3.52), who is having the best year of his career despite his recent struggles.
