Good morning and happy Friday, Mets fans.

Let the rumblings of a new era in Queens — with the possibly two Cy-Young winning starting pitchers — take us into the weekend!

Latest Mets News

The Mets have emerged as the favorite to land free-agent RHP Trevor Bauer, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. While no deal is imminent, Bauer has been heavily linked to New York and the Dodgers, with much speculation that a deal will be in place within the next few days.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted that the Mets had agreed to a deal with Bauer, only for Mark Feinsand of MLB to refute him six minutes later. So, the race trudges on.

Coming off a season in which he was awarded the National League Cy Young Award, the 30-year-old would solidify an elite starting rotation of two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Carlos Carrasco, and David Peterson – with an anticipated late-season return from Noah Syndergaard after his full recovery from Tommy John surgery.

The St. Lucie Mets are hiring Jerome Williams as the team’s pitching coach for the 2021 season, according to Michael Mayer. The former big league pitcher started his coaching career with the Kingsport Mets in 2019.

On This Date in Mets History

The Mets’ first owner, Joan Whitney Payson, would’ve turned 118 today. The original Mrs. Met was the third woman owner in MLB history and the first female to purchase a major league sports franchise without inheriting it.

After the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved west in 1957, a hole was left in the hearts of New York baseball fans. Mrs. Payson was a part of the group that brought National League baseball to the big apple, and remained a loyal Met until her death in 1975. Under Payson, the Mets went from a 40-120 record in their first season — the most defeats in a single season in the modern history of baseball- to bringing home the 1969 World Series Championship just seven years later. Happy birthday, Mrs. Met!
