Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Monday that Ángel Hernández, the controversial umpire who has brought out the ire of players, coaches, and fans alike, is retiring from Major League Baseball, effective immediately. A high-ranking MLB official told USA Today that Hernández and MLB spent the last two weeks negotiating a financial settlement, which came to a resolution over the weekend. Hernández spent the last 33 years working in MLB, overseeing his final game on May 9, and has been replaced on his crew by Jacob Metz.

The Mets and Dodgers were rained out on Monday afternoon, forcing the teams to play a straight doubleheader today. Tylor Megill (0-2, 3.00 ERA) will make his third start of the season in the opener against towering righty Tyler Glasnow (6-3, 3.09 ERA). José Quintana (1-4, 5.13 ERA) will take the hill in the nightcap against Gavin Stone (4-2, 3.60 ERA). The first game is scheduled to begin at 4:10 p.m.
Starling Marte became the fifth active player to join the investment and ownership group of Baseball United, the baseball league based in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Marte said he looks forward to elevating the sport in the Middle East, India, and Pakistan.

The Braves have officially placed Ronald Acuña Jr. on the injured list with a torn ACL and activated All-Star catcher Sean Murphy. In addition, Atlanta called up outfielder J.P. Martínez and designated former Met Joey Wendle for assignment.
The Nationals have reinstated outfielder Lane Thomas from the injured list and designated Victor Robles for assignment. Once a consensus top-five prospect in baseball, Robles has just a .667 OPS across eight big league seasons.
The Mariners have placed second baseman Jorge Polanco on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain and called up infielder Ryan Bliss from Triple-A Tacoma. Acquired in the trade for Paul Sewald in 2023, Bliss is batting .247/.382/.445 with seven homers in 229 plate appearances and a Triple-A-leading 28 steals. Seattle also shifted outfielder Sam Haggerty to the 60-day IL.
The Guardians have released veteran outfielder Ramón Laureano. The 29-year-old was designated for assignment earlier in the week. Laureano batted just .143 with 32 strikeouts in 70 plate appearances for Cleveland this year.

2008: Down 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to two homers by Cody Ross, Endy Chávez leads off the frame with a game-tying homer off Kevin Gregg. After Alfredo Amezaga puts the Marlins back in front with a homer in the 12th inning, the Mets get two men on before Fernando Tatis ropes a double down the line to win the game, 7-6.
2013: Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Daniel Murphy leads off with a double against Mariano Rivera, and David Wright ties the game with a single. Lucas Duda follows by singling home Wright with the winning run, giving the Mets a 2-1 victory. This marks the first time in Rivera’s career that he’s failed to record an out in a save opportunity.
