In case you’ve been living under a rock, Gary Cohen and Howie Rose are getting inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame on Saturday! It’s so deserved and we here at MMO are so excited. Congratulations to them both!
In celebration, we wanted to share our favorite Gare and Howie calls. Let’s take a fun trip down memory lane!
John Sheridan
Gary: Endy Chávez’s catch
Howie: Mike Piazza’s 9/11 home run
Matt Mancuso
Gary: Endy Chávez’s catch
Howie: Yoenis Cespedes’ September 2015 home run off of Drew Storen. “It’s going for a ride! It’s not coming back!”
Rich Sparago
Gary: “Turn those thumbs around” vs. Miami in 2021
Howie: Johan Santana’s no-hitter
Christian De Block
Gary: Bartolo Colon’s home run
Howie: Piazza’s 9/11 home run
Johnluke Chaparro
Gary: His call for Endy Chavez’s catch in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS is stuff of legends. Perfectly captured the insanity of the moment! You couldn’t have asked for a better person to describe one of the biggest moments in Mets history. Such passion, too! “He went to the apex of his leap and caught it at the webbing of his glove, with his elbow up above the fence!”
Howie: The 2015 pennant-clinching strikeout by Jeurys Familia against the Cubs is one of his best. 15 years of waiting shone through Howie as it did all of us and he was able to capture the moment perfectly. Elation for all of us after 15 years away from the big show!
Dan Quiñones
Gary: Carlos Beltran’s walk-off homer against the Phillies in the 16th in 2006 “And we’re going home!”
Howie: Mets win the 2015 pennant (Sidenote: I know it’s not Mets, but Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!, is iconic and deserves an honorable mention any time that Howie’s best calls are mentioned)
Michelle Ioannou
Gary: It’s a toss up for me between Endy Chávez’s catch and Bartolo Colon’s home run.
Howie: Definitely Piazza’s 9/11 home run. I still have chills.
