I can’t believe we have not discussed this yet, but better late than never right?! The black jerseys are back! Here are our thoughts on it.
I think Marcus Stroman said it best when he said that when he thinks about the Mets, he thinks about the black jerseys.
The black jerseys were prevalent for an entire generation of Mets fans, and so many stars donned them such as Mike Piazza, Edgardo Alfonzo, David Wright, Carlos Beltran and many more.
It will be exiting to see the team wear them in their rotation while also still staying true to the blue and Orange on a more regular basis.
Plus, Pete Alonso’s idea of “Friday night blackouts” with the team wearing the black on the field and the fans wearing black would look so cool.
First, let me start off by saying that I grew up with the Mets wearing the black uniforms, and there is definitely a certain nostalgia I feel whenever I think of that time. But once the haze of the past fades, I quickly go back to how I’ve always felt about the black uniforms: I’m not a big fan. To me, the Mets look their best when are only using their traditional (and gorgeous) colors of orange and blue. I don’t want to sound like Howie Rose yelling at the clouds over my dislike for the black uniforms, but I do hope that they come back only on a limited basis and aren’t back in the fold full time. That being said, the “Friday night blackout” idea is awesome and something I can get along with.
I’m not a fan of alternate jerseys. The Mets’ colors are blue and orange, and that should be reflected in their uniforms. Plus, their home white pinstripes and road grays are classic. That said, if the black jerseys are going to be a Friday thing, and not part of some rotation, then I’m fine with it. More fans want the black jerseys than don’t, so Marketing 101 tells you that you have to play to your customer base. I heard months ago that part of the black jersey revival was to sell some game-used ones and donate the money to charity. If that’s the case, I’m even more aligned with the idea of “blackout Fridays.”
As a relatively younger, newer Mets fan, I’m fairly indifferent on this matter. I like the black jerseys well enough, although I’m not as attached to them as many others are. I certainly don’t mind them once in a while but I’d honestly prefer the Mets stick to orange and blue the majority of the time.
You bet I still have my Mike Piazza black jersey from the late ’90s! I feel like my childhood is back in a way — there definitely is nostalgia there.
