After a much needed day off on Monday, the New York Mets (51-48) begin a three-game series with the San Diego Padres (47-52) on Tuesday at Citi Field.
Rookie right-hander Noah Syndergaard (4-5, 2.97) will get the opener for the Mets and will be opposed by RHP James Shields (8-3, 3.77) for the Padres. First pitch is at 7:10 PM.
Series Matchups
Wednesday: RHP Bartolo Colon (9-9, 4.60) vs. RHP Tyson Ross (6-8, 3.45), 7:10 p.m. ET
Thursday: LHP Jonathon Niese (5-9, 3.75) vs. RHP Andrew Cashner (4-10, 3.93), 12:10 p.m. ET
Juan Lagares and Wilmer Flores are out of the starting lineup for third straight game.
Of course it’s easy to say that Terry Collins is sticking to his mantra of you hit you play. But let’s see what happens when there’s a left-hander on the mound . My guess is you’ll see Lagares and Flores both in there.
Pinky bet?

This should be an interesting series. The Padres are about to become sellers, and with the trade deadline coming up, we could be on watch throughout the series, with at least one player on the Padres linked to the Mets.
The Padres come in tonight with three players being heavily looked at other teams including Upton, Kimbrel and tonight’s starter, James Shields. The Mets find themselves as buyers for the first time in forever after completing another trade yesterday for Tyler Clippard.
The Mets will send out Noah Syndergaard tonight who is 4-5 over 13 starts and and 78.2 innings with a 2.97 ERA and 82 strikeouts. In his last 5 starts he is 2-1 over 34.0 innings with a 1.59 ERA with 34 strikeouts. The only blemish in his last start that kept him to 5.0 innings were walks as he allowed a career high with 5. One of the worst starts of his young career though was in San Diego where he allowed 7 ER over 4.0 innings, but he also struck out 10. The Padres have the following numbers against Thor:
- Kemp 0-3
- Norris 2-3, HR
- Upton 0-3
- Venable 2-3, 3B
- Alonso 2-2
The Mets bats will face off against James Shields in what could be his last start as a Padre. He is 8-3 over 26.2 innings with a 3.77 ERA. He has tossed 0.0 innings in his last two starts allowing only ER while striking out 13 batters. He beat the Mets back at the start of June allowing 2 ER over 6 hits and 7.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Granderson 7-61, 2 2B, 3B, 2 HR
- Johnson 2-6
- Uribe 3-12, 3B
- Murphy 1-6
- Duda 1-3
- Flores 1-3
Lets Go Mets!
