jacob degromTonight in Flushing the Mets look to take the 2nd game of their series against the Rockies. The Mets will send Rookie of the Year hopeful Jacob deGrom (7-6, 2.79) to the hill against righty Christian Bergman (2-2, 5.23). First pitch is at 7:10pm.

In his last start, deGrom received a no-decision in a 4-3 win against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on September 3rd. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run. deGrom walked two while striking out six in the 114-pitch effort.

Over his last 12 starts, deGrom has gone 7-2 with a 1.95 ERA, issuing just 21 walks and striking out 78 dating back to June 21st. He ranks fourth in the majors in ERA since that date with only Clayton Kershaw (1.19), Corey Kluber (1.61) and Jon Lester (1.83) pitching to a lower mark.

Last night was the first time in team history the Mets had five or more hits in a game with no singles (four doubles and two triples). We’ll call that the oddest stat of the week.

The Mets walked off winners last night after a good start from Niese and very late, but not too late, hitting from Flores as the Mets continue a late season push to the .500 mark. Jacob deGrom gets the start tonight. On the season he is 7-6 over 19 games and 119.1 innings with a 2.79 ERA. In his last two starts he has allowed 2 runs, none earned over 13.0 innings. Jacob missed the Rockies the last time the Mets played him this year, and he has never faced the club in his career (since this is his first year in the league). He has also never faced anyone on the Rockies roster in a major league game before.

Christian Bergman is starting for the Rockies with a 2-2 record over 6 career games. In that stretch he has pitched 32.2 innings with a 5.23 ERA. Since he was called up at the end of August he has made three starts with a better 3.57 ERA. Like deGrom, he has never faced his opponent in his career and never faced any individual batters in a major league game.

So its a game of mysteries tonight with two rookies on the mound.

Lets Go Mets!
