The Mets and Giants played a wild game last night in San Francisco. The Giants had a huge lead early the Mets scored 10 runs in the final three frames to the lead (including a seven run eighth inning). However they couldn’t hold onto the lead in the bottom of the ninth and ended up losing the game 13-12. The Mets will play a late afternoon game today to decide the series.

Thomas Szapucki will make his 2022 debut with the Mets today! He pitched in one game last season, his only major league game, where he allowed six runs from seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. About a month after his major league debut, he was sidelined for the rest of the season recovering from ulnar nerve transposition surgery. This year in the minors he has started seven games, tossing 22 innings with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.318 WHIP. In his last start he was used only for one inning, probably in preparation for being called up today. Before that he had a three start stretch where he tossed 71, 67 and 70 pitches which lead to four innings, four innings and five innings of work. That’s a useful barometer to figure out his limit this afternoon.

The Mets bats will get a look at Jakob Junis today. The long time Royal signed this off-season with the Giants and is off-season. Over five games and three starts, he has pitched 26 2/3 innings with a 2.70 ERA, 3.65 FIP, 1.013 WHIP and a 151 ERA+. As a starter only he has pitched 16 2/3 innings with a 4.32 ERA and 4.99 FIP. He missed the Mets earlier this season and the Mets as a whole haven’t faced Junis a whole lot:

  • Francisco Lindor 18-36, 3 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 2 K, .500/.500/1.056
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-6, HR, 5 K
  • Mark Canha 2-5, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Pete Alonso 1-3, K
  • Luis Guillorme 0-3

Let’s Go Mets!
