The Mets look for the series split today as they take on the Braves this afternoon in Queens. After dropping the first two games of the series, everything went right in Flushing last night for the Mets. Zack Wheeler was fantastic, shutting out the Braves over seven innings and the bullpen kept that true behind him including a quick ninth inning by Gsellman featuring three groundouts that all went to McNeil. Speaking of McNeil, the second basemen who should be playing every day went 4-for-4 with a double last night.

Corey Oswalt returns for what seems like his bi-weekly cross-country flight to the Mets. On the season he is 1-2 over six games and five starts with a 5.27 ERA, 5.26 FIP, 0.988 WHIP and 73 ERA+. Like always when Oswalt pitches, it is worth noting he has done better for the Mets when he is pitching on regular rest and that doesn’t often happen for him. His WHIP is the sign of his potential, being supported by games like a July 9 outing against the Phillies where the only hit he allowed was a bases-clearing double to a pitcher that brought in three runs. In his last two starts as a Met, he has allowed three runs over 10 innings from five hits and two walks.
Julio Teheran is 8-7 over 115 innings and 21 starts this season with a 4.46 ERA, 5.34 FIP, 1.261 WHIP and 87 ERA+. He had two great back to back starts in July where he allowed one earned run over 13.0 innings. He’s followed that up with back to back starts allowing 12 runs, 10 earned over 9.1 innings all to the Marlins. So far against the Mets this year he has been lights-out, allowing two runs over 21 innings in three different starts. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Reyes 6-for-29, 2 2B, 2 BB
- Flores 3-for-21, HR, 3 BB
- Conforto 4-for-17, HR, BB
- Frazier 3-for-17, 2B, HR
- Bautista 1-for-10, 2B
- Plawecki 0-for-11
- Rosario 1-for-9, 3B
- Nimmo 1-for-4, 3 BB
- Mesoraco 0-for-4, BB
Game Notes
Corey Oswalt has pitched five innings and allowed three or fewer hits in each of his last three starts…He is the first rookie in team history to do. The last Mets pitcher to do so was Noah Syndergaard from August 21-September 2, 2016. Oswalt earned his first major league win in his last outing, July 25 vs. San Diego. He worked five innings and allowed two runs in that contest.
Oswalt has a 0.85 WHIP since July 4, which is eighth-best in the majors (min. 20 innings). His .162 opponent batting average in that span is the sixth-best in the majors and his .519 OPS against
ranks eighth.
The Mets are 4-11 vs. Atlanta with four games remaining. The last time the Mets lost 11 or more games in one year to the Braves was in 2012 (6-12). The Mets snapped their five-game losing streak at home to Atlanta last night.
Jeff McNeil went 4-4 last night. He became the seventh Met to register a four-hit game within the first 10 games of his career. The last to do so was T.J. Rivera on August 16, 2016, at Arizona.
Jose Bautista’s next home run will be his 340th career homer and tie him with Jack Clark for 98th on major league
baseball’s all-time list. Bautista is sixth among active players in home runs, behind Albert Pujols, Adrián Beltré, Miguel Cabrera, Edwin Encarnacion and Nelson Cruz.
Austin Jackson has gone 7-20 (.350) since joining the Mets with a .409 OBP and a .500 slugging percentage (seven games).
Amed Rosario is tied for third in the NL with three stolen bases since the All-Star break. Rosario has been successful
in eight of his last 10 stolen base attempts. Overall, is tied for seventh in the majors with six triples.
Let’s Go Mets!
