The Mets had a doubleheader sweep of the Yankees on Friday and were close to beating the Yankees yesterday. The Yankees got a great start from J.A. Happ and as soon as the Yankees took him out of the game, the Mets tied the game thanks to Wilson Ramos. Eventually the Mets lost 2-1 in a game that just barely slipped away.

The concern for the Mets heading into today’s game – how many arms are available? The Mets had to use a lot more pitchers yesterday than they intended with Steven Matz lasting only one inning after feeling shoulder discomfort. This is going to put a lot of pressure on Rick Porcello, opening the game for the Mets since Seth Lugo is still getting stretched out when he starts the second game.

  2. Michael Conforto – RF
  3. J.D. Davis – 3B

Rick Porcello is 1-4 over six games and 28.0 innings with a 6.43 ERA, 3.03 FIP, 1.643 WHIP, and 66 ERA+. Porcello got off to a good start in August, allowing three runs over 13.0 innings while striking out nine but his last two starts have been lacking. He has allowed eight runs from 15 hits over 9.0 innings. He faced the Yankees four times last year allowing 20 runs from 27 hits over 15.0 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against Porcello:

He has pitched 13.2 innings this season, allowing 10 runs leading to a 6.59 ERA, 5.55 FIP, 1.098 WHIP, and 66 ERA+. Mike King had an incredibly 2018 season in the minors where he had a 1.79 ERA over 161.1 innings from high A ball to AAA (1.15 ERA over six starts). The following year he had arm issues in Spring Training that kept him off the field for most of the year. He made only 11 appearances in the minors in 2019 with a 5.87 ERA over 46.0 innings.

Game Notes

The Mets bullpen has tossed 11.1 innings and has allowed only one earned run during this series. Over the last 10 games, the bullpen is 6-2 with a 3.62 ERA (15 earned runs/37.2 innings) with 24 walks and 44 strikeouts. The team is 6-4 in that span.

Dom Smith is four PA shy of being a qualified hitter. If he did qualify, his 1.122 OPS would rank second in the majors, while his .716 SLG would rank fourth.

The Mets have won five of their last six road games. The Mets own a .273/.357/.460 slash line with 83 runs in away games this year and are 9-8 with a 4.51 ERA (71 earned runs/141.1 innings).
