bartolo colon

The Mets open a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field on Friday at 7:10 PM. Bartolo Colon (3-5, 5.34) gets the start for the Mets and will be opposed by Chase Anderson  (2-0, 5.06) for the D-Backs.

Colon is coming off his best start of the year against the Washington Nationals, tossing a season high 8.0 innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run. He has fanned 43 batters and issued just six walks this season for a 7.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio, fourth-best in the majors.

Terry Collins said Travis d’Arnaud may play a couple of rehab games before returning from the disabled list for concussion symptoms. He took part in batting practice at Citi Field today.

Jose Valverde will close tonight if Mets have a save opportunity, writes Adam Rubin. Jenrry Mejia is fine, he says, but just worked consecutive days for the first time since 2010.

Wilmer Flores is starting for the third straight time at shortstop. He was 1-4 last night and was robbed of a hit. Flores has reached base safely in six straight games and is hitting .364 (8-22) during that stretch.

David Wright has 30 hits this month, tied for the most in the NL with Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers. He is hitting .341 (30-88) with 11 runs scored, eight doubles and 10 RBI in 20 games this month, reaching base safely in 17 of those 20 games.

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares – CF
  2. Daniel Murphy – 2B
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Curtis Granderson – RF
  5. Chris Young – LF
  6. Lucas Duda – 1B
  7. Wilmer Flores – SS
  8. Juan Centeno – C
  9. Bartolo Colon – RHP

The Mets finally snapped their losing streak last night against the Dodgers in one of the more bizarre games played in Citi Field that included career highlight reel catches for Puig and Campbell … and just awful baserunning and a clear not understanding of baseball rules. The Mets look to build off this as the Diamondbacks come to to town today with Colon on the mound as he takes on Chase Anderson.

Colon is 3-5 over 9 starts and 57.1 innings and a 5.34 ERA. Colon’s trend in May has been terrible start, good start, bad start, great start (last time out he tossed 8.0 innings allowing only 2 ER) so who knows which Colon shows up today. He missed the Diamondbacks earlier this year and in his career he has only faced Arizona once allowing 8 hits over 5.2 innings and 4 earned runs. The Diamondbacks have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Chavez 5-30, 2 2B, HR
  • Pennington 4-9, 2B
  • Hill 2-7
  • Ross 1-6

Chase Anderson is making this third start in his rookie season. So far he is 2-0 allowing 6 ER over 10.2 innings. He spent his time in Double A this season with a 4-2 record and 6 starts over 39.0 innings with a 0.69 ERA. He has never faced the Mets or any on Mets roster in his career, which makes perfect sense.

Lets Go Mets!
