The New York Mets (2-4) were defeated by a score of 10-3 by the Miami Marlins (2-4) in their first meeting of the season.

Pitching:

Steven Matz (0-1, 37.80 ERA) took the loss in a game where he was torched in 1.2 innings pitched. Matz allowed seven runs, all earned while giving up six hits. He struck out one, while walking two in what was the toughest start of his very young career.

It is worth noting that Matz had not seen any game action since April 1st. The lack of work could have made the Mets’ left a bit rusty during his season debut. After a dominant looking first inning, the Marlins jumped all over Matz, who seemed to be getting squeezed by an inconsistent strike zone from the home plate umpire, Jordan Baker.

The bullpen was uneven and heavily taxed. Hansel Robles and Antonio Bastardo combined for 3.2 innings. Robles gave up one run on four hits, while striking out three. Bastardo allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out two.

However, Addison Reed, Jeurys Familia and Jerry Blevins combined for 3.2 innings of shutout baseball to get the Mets through a tough loss to the pesky Miami team.

Offense:

Jarred Cosart held the Mets offense scoreless through the first three innings of the game. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that the offense showed some spark, scoring their only runs of the contest.

Yoenis Cespedes was 2-for-4 on the night, plating David Wright for his third RBI of the season and later scored for the Mets’ second run on a wild pitch by Cosart to Michael Conforto. The third run came on a fielders choice off the bat of Asdrubal Cabrera that scored Lucas Duda.

The Mets threatened again in the fifth, but nothing came of it as Duda left two men on base to end the inning. The Mets did not muster much offense the rest of the night.

Notes:

The Mets could not recover from the early 7-0 deficit that Matz left them with in tonight’s contest. It was too large a whole for a team whose offense has been stagnant in the early goings of this season.

The pesky Marlins do it again to the boys from Queens. The Mets were given one of the easier major league schedules in the month of May and they need to start playing a bit better to take advantage of it.

On Deck:

The Mets will play the middle game of the series tomorrow at 7:10 PM EST.

The God of Thunder himself, RHP Noah Syndergaard (1-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets in what should be a heck of a pitching matchup against Marlins phenom, RHP Jose Fernandez (0-1, 7.94 ERA)
