USATSI ike davis

Yesterday Duda. Today Ike. Who said the Mets can’t rotate first basemen with success?

In dramatic fashion, Ike Davis hit the first pinch-hit grand slam any team in the majors has seen since Brian Bogusevic for the Astros in 2011.

This game took on many different storylines as the innings progressed. First, it was a story of exceptional starting pitching by both Johnny Cueto and Dillon Gee. Then, Curtis Granderson hit his first home run as a Met to give the team a 2-1 lead. Before Dillon Gee gave away the lead on a Brandon Phillips two-run home run in the eighth. Debate raged in the stands and on Twitter whether Terry Collins should have pulled him. Finally, in the bottom of the 9th, after winning their first replay challenge, failing to bunt, but still getting on base via the walk, Ike Davis came to the plate. And boom!

Starter Focus

Dillon Gee

Gee pitched a wonderful game until he reached that infamous pitch count of ninety. Perhaps tentative to go to his beleaguered bullpen, Terry Collins left Gee in the game to face Brandon Phillips, and the Met-killer turned a great start into a potential loss with a two-run home run.

Gee struck out four, while walking only one, and collected 13 fly ball outs.

Johnny Cueto

Like Gee, Cueto made one big mistake that turned into a home run by Curtis Granderson, but otherwise was exceptional. Over seven innings, he struck out nine, walked three, and only surrendered five hits.
