MLB: New York Mets-Workouts

The New York Mets were able to get to the Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, pounding him for six runs in 3.2 innings in their 6-5 victory today.

Jacob deGrom made the start for the Mets after having his scheduled start on Monday scratched because of back stiffness. He was just fine today, needing only 30 pitches to throw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The only baserunner he gave up was a leadoff double to Giancarlo Stanton in the 2nd inning.

He was piggybacked by Steven Matz who was tagged for three runs in four innings of work, he walked one and struck out three. He gave up five hits including a RBI double by Robert Andino and a runs-coring triple by Austin Nola.

Hansel Robles pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning, striking out the first two batters he faced. Sean Gilmartin was hit for two runs in the final inning before getting a strikeout to end the game and pick up the save.

The big scare of the game, came when Yoenis Cespedes was hit by a pitch from Edwin Jackson and had to leave the game via a pinch runner in the 5th inning. Cespedes said it was his right wrist where he already had tape and he is fine. He went 1 for 2 with a one scored before leaving the game, he is now hitting .389 this spring.

Curtis Granderson and Travis d’Arnaud each knocked in three runs and had two base hits. Travis also walked, scored two runs, and hit a double off Fernandez for the Mets only extra base hit of the day.

Another day and another walk for Wilmer Flores who has shown more patience this week, he was 0 for 2 and scored a run. Alejandro De Aza continued his strong spring going 1 for 1 with two walks and two runs scored, he is hitting .455 in Grapefruit League play. Johnny Monell reached base in both of his plate appearances (single, walk) after taking over for Cespedes in the DH slot.

The Mets are back at it tomorrow against the Washington Nationals in a rare 6:10 PM game that will be aired on SNY.
