The Mets defeated the Marlins this evening (despite a late inning Marlin threat) at Citi Field by a score of 5-4, winning their seventh straight game!

The Mets’ seven-game winning streak is their longest since they won eight in a row in June 2010. They won 10 straight in 2008, and have a franchise record of 11, which they’ve done four times.

Offense:

The Mets got on the board first tonight, as Juan Lagares drove in Eric Campbell with a single to center field.

Travis d’Arnaud hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the third to put the Mets up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mets broke the game open, as Eric Campbell had an RBI single, and promptly scored himself, as Wilmer Flores blasted his second homer of the year, making it 5-0.

The Mets had a called overturned against them in the eighth inning, which originally had Juan Lagares reaching first on a throwing error by Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia which pulled Michael Morse off of first base and allowed Eric Campbell to score from second on the play, but after video review, the play was reversed, stating Morse had stayed on the base, ending the inning.

Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-4 tonight, and raised his batting average to .333 in the early campaign. Eric Campbell, Juan Lagares, and Wilmer Flores also picked up a pair of hits each, and played integral roles in tonight’s victory.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets, and pitched seven strong innings, striking out eight and yielded six hits, but didn’t allow a run to score. He earned his second win of the season.

DeGrom’s win was his seventh straight at Citi Field, and in 12 career home starts, he is now 7-3 with a 1.43 ERA. His scoreless streak is now at 18.1 innings!

Sean Gilmartin came on in the eighth inning and let up an RBI double to Dee Gordon. Gilmartin is a prime candidate to be cut when Bobby Parnell and Vic Black return from injury, as he hasn’t really made a case to stay, after allowing a run tonight and a home run to Chase Utley Tuesday night.

Buddy Carlylie replaced Gilmartin, and pitched the remainder of the inning, recording a strikeout in the process.

Carlos Torres started the ninth inning, and allowed a quick home run to Michael Morse. The next batter up was Marcell Ozuna, who singled. After striking out Ichiro, Adeiny Hechavarria also singled. Torres threw a wild pitch to the next batter, J.T. Realmuto which put runners on second and third with one out. Dee Gordon knocked in two after Realmuto struck out, cutting the deficit to 5-4 Mets.

Alex Torres was called on with two outs to end the game, and did just that, striking out Christian Yelich.

MMO Game Ball:

The game ball goes to Jacob deGrom who let up zero earned runs and struck out eight, earning his second victory of the season. Alex Torres is also an honorable mention for getting arguably the biggest out of the night, and securing the Mets the win.

On deck:

The Mets take on the Marlins and go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at Citi Field with the Dark Knight of Gotham (Matt Harvey) taking on Tom Koehler. Game time is 1:10 PM.
