The New York Mets avoided a sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins on Sunday, edging them out by a final score of 4-3.

Pitching

Bartolo Colon got the start and delivered a solid performance, holding the Marlins to three runs over seven innings of work. The one mistake was a pitch he left over the plate that Justin Bour put over the wall for a two run homer. Colon improved to 8-2 on the season, becoming the National League’s first eight game winner.

After Carlos Torres came in to start the eight and coughed up a hit, Terry Collins turned to Jeurys Familia for a five out save. The Mets closer sealed the deal for his 15th save, highlighted by a wicked strikeout of Giancarlo Stanton.

Offense

After the Mets scored a run in the first, courtesy of a Justin Bour error, Colon also delivered at the plate with an RBI double to put the Mets up 2-1 in the second. It was his second career extra-base hit.

Wilmer Flores continued his power surge, hitting his eighth home run of the season in the third inning, a solo shot that would give the Mets a two run cushion at the time.

However it was newly anointed third baseman Ruben Tejada who would strike the decisive blow, a two-out, RBI double off of former Marlins closer Steve Cishek in the seventh inning. And just like that the Mets avoided the sweep.

On Deck

The Mets head west to San Diego for a three game series, beginning on Monday. Jacob deGrom (5-4, 2.71) starts for the Mets and he opposes Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner (2-7, 3.00) at 10:10 PM.
