The New York Mets (48-53) were looking for the series victory this afternoon against the Seattle Mariners (53-48) at Safeco Field with Bartolo Colon facing off against highly touted rookie pitcher Taijuan Walker.
What you should know:
Bartolo Colon flirted with history this afternoon as he set down the first twenty batters to face him, before letting up a single with two outs in the seventh to Robinson Cano. Colon would last 7 and 1/3rd’s innings for the Amazin’s, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking one.
Taijuan Walker would last five plus innings for Seattle, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking six and striking out five.
The Mets would get off to an early start this afternoon taking a 1-0 lead in the first. After Eric Young, Jr. drew a walk, and reached second after the Mariners were unable to pick him off, the play was challenged and stood, keeping Young safe at second. He was promptly driven in by a Daniel Murphy double down the left field line.
A scary moment occurred in the top of the fifth inning, as Ruben Tejada was hit in the head with the pitch. Tejada left the field on his own power and was replaced by Eric Campbell.
The Mets would score again in the top of the sixth inning, as Juan Lagares hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lucas Duda.
David Wright would tack on another run for the Mets, as he drove in Eric Young, Jr. with a single to left field, making it 3-0 New York.
The Mariners would score two runs in the seventh inning, after two runners reached base, Brad Miller hit a deep fly ball that hit high off the wall in right center that just missed tying the game. This would end Colon’s day as he was replaced by Jeurys Familia. Familia would allow another run to score before ending the inning.
Jenrry Mejia let two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but shut the door to earn his fourteenth save of the season.
The Mets take two out of three from Seattle, and are now .500 on the current road trip.
