matt harvey

The Mets (20-14) fell to the Cubs (18-15) 2-1 tonight although despite a spectacular game from the Dark Knight.

Matt Harvey pitched seven strong innings, allowing three hits, two walks and no earned runs while striking out nine Cubs.

Carlos Torres came in to pitch the 8th. He gave up a one-out single to Addison Russell who advanced to second on a passed ball. He then scored on a base hit by Dexter Fowler.

The Mets had an opportunity to score in the 9th with Duda on second and one out but failed to bring him in.

Torres remained in the game for the 9th and gave up back-to-back singles to Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro. Rizzo advanced on the hit after Cuddyer more-or-less spiked the throw to third into the ground (granted it would of been a close play with a good throw).

After an intentional walk to load the bases, Collins made a double switch, putting Johnny Monell behind the plate and Jeurys Familia into the game. He also brought Cuddyer to the infield for a five-man infield. Familia struck out Jorge Soler, before walking Chris Coghlan on a 3-1 count, bringing in the winning run for the Cubs.

Granderson duda

The Mets got on the board first in the top of the 6th. After a Curtis Granderson single followed by a Daniel Murphy double, Michael Cuddyer grounded out to third, scoring Granderson. The Mets left two on that inning and could not score another that inning. It’s important to note that the Mets were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position tonight.

Something we haven’t seen much this year are clean defensive games for the Metropolitans. Wilmer Flores and Dilson Herrera turned a pair of nice double plays behind Harvey. Daniel Murphy also made a nice David Wright-like bare-handed play on a roller down the third-base line.

Giving up a “walk”-off win sounds classic Metropolitans but they will look to get one in this series tomorrow afternoon. The southpaws square off tomorrow as Jonathan Niese (3-2)  takes on Travis Wood (2-2) at 2:20 p.m.
