Update 10:27

Terry Collins addressed the following issues at the post-game press conference:

  • He was not happy with his team’s offensive performance. He will review the tape to see if Clay Hensley had extra movement on his pitches or if his team was just having poor at-bats.
  • Collins was pleased with Capuano’s start, saying that he gave the team a chance .
  • When Hairston went down early, it limited what the Mets could do with the rest of their personnel.
  • If Ronny Paulino had reached base in the ninth inning, Carlos Beltran would have pinch hit.
  • Jose Reyes will be in the lineup tomorrow. Beltran will also be penciled into the batting order but could be scratched if he needs another day.
All around, tough game tonight for the Amazins. The team is now back to one game under .500 and has lost 3-of-4 since the All-Star break.
The Mets will look to get back on track tomorrow night as Dillon Gee takes the mound against Kyle Lohse and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Thanks to all those who followed along with the live blog tonight. I hope you enjoyed it (I sure did!) and will tune in next time.

Update 10:07

Mets lose 4-1.

Time of game: 2:54

WP: Hensley

LP: Capuano

SV: Nunez

Stay tuned for Terry Collins post-game comments.

Update 10:05

Bay went up there hacking but picked the wrong part of the park to hit it out. Sac fly makes it a 4-1 game.

Update 10:04

Great at-bat from Duda.

The tying run comes to the plate and it’s Jason Bay.

He can redeem himself for an otherwise poor evening with a big hit here.

Update 10:00

John Buck out to talk to Randy Choate. Surprisingly, Hanley Ramirez joins them. What could he possibly have to say here?

Choate’s actually coming out of this game in favor of Marlins closer Leo Nunez.

Update 9:53

Harris has accounted for 66% of the Mets offensive output tonight.

Update 9:49

So we head to the bottom of the ninth. Let’s see if the Mets can find some life in their bats.

Update 9:47

David Wright went 3-for-6 with three singles for the St. Lucie Mets tonight. He played all nine innings as St. Lucie won 19-4.

In the words of Mrs. Doubtfire, “Help is on the way!”

Update 9:42

0-for-4 night for Angel Pagan out of the leadoff spot. Reyes is sorely missed.

Update 9:36

32,441 attendance.

Update 9:30

Pedro Beato enters the game for the Mets.

I tried desperately to find him before the game. I wanted to ask him if he thinks he’s ready to close games, and also if he remembers when I got two hits (a single and double) off him in a summer game in 2006…

Update 9:28

RBI single for Logan Morrison, but good throw from Duda to nab him at second.

4-0 Florida.

Update 9:20

Capuano heading out for the eighth inning.

Good performance tonight by Cap except for the three-run two-out rally in the fourth.

Update 9:18

Tomorrow’s start Dillon Gee looks bored in the dugout. Hopefully, he’ll be ready go to tomorrow.

Update 9:16

Marlins turning to Edward Mujica.

Update 9:14

It’s OK though. Don’t fish like water?

Update 9:13

It’s now pouring.

Update 9:09

This is a typical game where the Mets teams from the past two seasons would never come back and win.

But this team has given us some hope late in games. This would be a good one to come back and win, especially with a tough series against the Cardinals coming up.

Update 9:07

Rain coming down here at Citi Field. Fans seeking cover.

Update 9:06

Though the team is usually inconsistent on the field, the one great constant is Lou Monte’s “Lazy Mary” during the 7th inning stretch.

Update 9:03

Cameron definitely thought that was out right off the bat given his bat flip.

But then he realized this is Citi Field.

Update 9:00

At least the Yankees are losing 4-2 to the Rays. That game is being delayed by power problems at Tropicana Field.

Update 8:55

Lefty Mike Dunn relieves Clay Hensley in the bottom of the sixth.

Hensley finished with five innings, no runs and one just hit.

Update 8:53

Mets playing a tribute to Gary Carter on the scoreboard. Fans respond well.

Update 8:49

At least there’s some excitement on the field tonight wearing a Mets uniform.

Update 8:40

For those who don’t know, Jose Reyes was 1-for-3 with a double today for the Cyclones. Sandy Alderson was at MCU Park today but made his way back to Citi Field for BP.

Update 8:39

We are halfway through this one.

3-0 Marlins.

Update 8:38

The ump got that one right.

Update 8:37

Seeing that replay in the press box, Bonifacio was safe by a mile.

Update 8:35

WOW! What a catch by Tejada!

Full extension, over the shoulder dive. This kid wants it.

Update 8:28

Remember what I said about Scott Hairston hitting fourth.

Well, that’s not as bad as having Nick Evans in the cleanup spot.

I’ve heard some rumblings today that maybe Evans gets sent down once Reyes is activated.

Update 8:26

Good battle from Murph, but Hensley wins the battle for the first out.

Update 8:17

Cameron ripped that ball. 3-0 Fins.

Keep in mind all this damage came with two outs and nobody on.

Update 8:13

Mike Stanton is a beast.

Two-RBI double gives the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

Update 8:09

…and Mets fans will have to wait another day for their first no-hitter.

Even worse, it was Hanley Ramirez that broke it up.

Update 8:03

Hairston left game with a left shin contusion. X-Rays negative. Listed as day-to-day. Can anyone on this team stay healthy?

Update 8:02

Standing ovation for SSGT Matthew Clark between innings. Always a nice gesture in honoring the military veterans.

Update 7:57

Some guy almost made a sick diving catch onto the field on that Tejada foul ball. But it also brings back unfortunate memories of some foul ball incidents from the last week.

Update 7:54

Of course, the first base runner is a walk to the pitcher.

But Capuano looking good through the first three innings.

Update 7:51

While Bay has struggles with the stick, he plays a mean left field. I’ll give him that.

Update 7:50

Welcome back to New York Mike Cameron!

If anyone remembers (I do because I was there), Cameron made his first official return to NY in 2006 while with the Padres…that was the same game when Mike Piazza made his return to Shea.

Update 7:48

Hairston is out of the game.

Nick Evans goes to first and Lucas Duda shifts to right field.

I guess the foul ball plagues Hairston more than we thought.

Update 7:45

Bay grounds into double-play, then hears the boo’s from the crowd.

I guess hitting lessons from Terry Collins before the game didn’t pay off…at least in that at-bat.

Update 7:44

Duda is even bigger in person.

Update 7:41

Just in case Capuano gets in trouble later, the Mets can turn to a reliever…

Update 7:39

Is that Chris Capuano out there or Nolan Ryan? Strikes out the side!

Update 7:35

I don’t think I’ve ever see a player walk slower back to the dugout than Hanley Ramirez.

Regardless of striking out, show some respect for the game.

I’ve said it before in a post and I’ll say it again: Ramirez is a selfish, disrespectful ballplayer.

Update 7:28

Ray Ramirez out to tend to Hairston…

and here comes Terry.

It seems like he’s pointing to his ankle. He’s taking some practice cuts.

He’s staying in this game.

Update 7:24

No offense at all to Scott Hairston, but can the Mets really expect to win games with him batting fourth?

Regardless, it’s all about what you do in clutch situations. Drive him in here, Scotty!

Update 7:22

Nice rip by Harris!

In other news, the Mets today signed OF Fernando Perez and LHP Gustavo Chacin. Maybe this is a precursor to potential trades (Beltran and Byrdak)?

Update 7:18

Note from the Citi Field scoreboard: Pagan is one of 14 Major Leaguers who have more walks than strikeouts this season (29-28). Pretty cool.

Update 7:16

Another 1-2-3 first inning for Capuano. Now let’s hit!

Update 7:15

Just another looooong out!

Update 7:13

That looked like it was out from up here, but just a long out.

Update 7:10

Fraternizing with the enemy?

Update 7:09

The Mets take the field, sporting their alternate black jerseys.

Let’s Go Mets!

Update 7:00

There’s as many fans on the field for the pre-game ceremony as there are in the stands. Definitely looks like rain.

Update 6:53

OK, I’m back in the press box after spending some time on the field. I had a great interview with Justin Turner which I will be writing up later this week. He has the night off tonight so was really the only one who was able to talk.

I was present at Terry Collins pre-game press conference where he said:

  • Reyes should be ready to go tomorrow after playing today in Brooklyn.
  • Beltran was supposed to play tonight but he was still feeling ill was was seeing the doctor again today.
  • He hopes Beltran’s flu symptoms don’t spread.
  • Bay needs to play everyday so he can regain his pre-All-Star game form.
  • He will be cautious with Reyes once he returns.
  • Beltran is handling trade rumors very professionally.

Hey Mets Fans!

Tonight I will be live blogging the Mets vs. Marlins game from the press box at Citi Field.

The game is a makeup of the rainout from May 17th.

Chris Capuano (8-8, 4.12 ERA) will take on Clay Hensley (0-2, 3.60 ERA) for a 7:10 start.

The Mets are fresh off losing two of three to the Phillies, while the Marlins just took three of four in Chicago against the Cubs and have won seven of their last eight games.

Rain may be in the forecast, but since this is a makeup itself, the teams will really try to get this game in.

Be sure to follow along before, during and after the game as I will be on the field talking to players and following along with the game action all night.
