According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Major League Baseball sent a memo last week to clubs instructing them to proceed under the assumption that there will be no designated hitter in 2021 in the National League.

This if course, follows a 2020 shortened season in which teams operated with an universal DH. It allowed the Mets to get more at-bats from guys like Robinson Cano, J.D. Davis, Dominic Smith, and Pete Alonso without having them in the field.

No universal DH in 2021 would certainly be a bad thing for a Mets team that is filled with good bats that don’t play good defense, and in some cases have too many players for certain positions.

It will be curious to see how this could change the Mets thinking this offseason. The loss of Cano for the 2021 season actually helped the Mets by giving them more roster flexibility, and the DH would’ve been another boon for them.
