Sano signs extension

The Minnesota Twins and third baseman Miguel Sano have reached a deal on a three-year extension with a club option for 2023, thus avoiding arbitration according to Jeff Pasan of ESPN. The deal buys out Sano’s last two years of arbitration eligibility while also giving the team control over two years of his would-be-free-agent seasons.

Sano, 26, has had his ups and downs in Minnesota, but after returning from an Achilles injury in 2019, he went on to hit 34 home runs in 439 at-bats.

Diamondbacks Extend Peralta

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Arizona Diamondbacks and David Peralta agreed to a three-year, $22 million extension on Friday.

Peralta, 32, is coming off a season in which he registered a 106 OPS+ and won a Gold Glove Award. In 2018, Peralta also won a Silver Slugger Award as he hit .293/.352/.516 with 30 home runs and 87 RBI that season.

Milwaukee gets Gyorko

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year deal with a team option for 2021 with infielder Jeff Gyorko. Coming off a season where the 31-year-old only appeared in 101 at-bats while battling multiple injuries, the Brewers are hoping Gyorko can recreate some of the production he displayed while playing for the divisional rival Cardinals.

Jake Faria was DFA’d to make room for Gyorko. Faria came to the Brewers by way of a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last season and so far in his brief major league career he has seen little success.

Orioles get another young infielder

Richard Urena is headed to the Baltimore Orioles after the team claimed him off waiver from the Toronto Blue Jays the team announced Friday. Urena, 23, has had a hard time producing at the major league level through three seasons in Toronto, yet has shown some success in the minors. With Baltimore in full rebuild mode, Urena becomes another young infielder with whom the team hopes a change of scenery amounts to success.

The team also announced it has DFA’d Pat Valaika to make room for Urena. Valaika was claimed earlier this offseason from the Colorado Rockies and will now have to wait and see if he is picked up by another team or can clear waivers and get another shot in camp with Baltimore.

Red Sox and Marlins make a deal

The Boston Red Sox have made a trade with the Miami Marlins receiving righty Austin Brice in exchange for infielder Angeudis Santos. Brice, who was DFA’d by Miami, put together a decent 2019 in 44 2/3 innings with an ERA of 3.43 and a 2.56 K/BB ratio.

Brice now becomes the fourth reliever let go by Miami this offseason to land with another team. As for the Marlins side of the deal, the 18-year-old Santos was not considered one of Boston’s top prospects and struggled from the plate last year batting .184 in 174 at-bats.

Another catcher comes off the market

Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed John Ryan Murphy to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. Murphy spent most of the 2019 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks before briefly joint the Atlanta Braves.

While having never been known for his hitting ability, Murphy is one of the game’s s premier pitch framers. With only two catchers on their 40-man roster, Murphy will definitely be in the mix for one of Pittsburgh’s catching jobs.

Sam Haggerty heads to Seattle

The Seattle Mariners announced that they have claimed Sam Haggerty off waivers from the New York Mets. The 25-year-old had a brief stint with the Mets in 2019.

While most know him from his call up video, Haggerty is also known for having played multiple positions while spending most of the last two seasons in Double-A. He was acquired by the Mets, along with Walker Lockett, in a trade that sent Kevin Plawecki to the Cleveland Indians.
