Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino‘s season ended before it even began. According to Newsday‘s Erik Boland, Yankees general Manager Brian Cashman announced that Tommy John’s surgery was recommended for the two-time All-Star on Tuesday.

Cashman said that two doctors have confirmed that Severino should undergo this surgery, and the right hander said agreed that he should have the operation done as soon as possible.

This recommendation was made after Severino was sidelined from throwing his second bullpen session of the season and from taking part in pitchers fielding drills on February 20.

However, injuries are not something new to Severino. Severino has been dealing with forearm discomfort since Game 3 of the American League Champion Series against the Houston Astros last season.

He also dealt with injuries that kept him out for the majority of the 2019 season as well. Coming off a successful 2018 season, where he posted a 3.39 ERA with 220 strikeouts across 191 1/3 innings, the Yankees signed Severino to a four-year, $40 million contract in February 2019.

However, Severino spent most of the 2019 season on the Injured List due to right shoulder and lat muscle injuries. He didn’t pitch in the major leagues until September, and even then he only made three regular season, and two postseason starts.
