The Boston Red Sox will promote bench coach Ron Roenicke to interim manager according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

Speier added that it is possible and perhaps very likely that Roenicke’s interim label is dropped once MLB completes its investigation. However, in the meantime he will retain that title heading into spring training.

Roenicke will replace Alex Cora, whom the Red Sox fired on Jan. 14 in wake of his involvement in the Houston Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scandal when he was their bench coach.

Both Jackie Bradley Jr. and Matt Barnes shared positives thoughts on Roenicke’s elevation to manager.

“Amazing,” Bradley Jr. said. “Very intellectual guy. Great mind. Has a love for the game. He’s great.”

“He’s awesome,” Barnes said. “He knows the game incredibly well. I think it will be nice having a familiar face with somebody who knows the guys, who’s been there, who has the experience that he has.”

Roenicke managed the Milwaukee Brewers for four-plus seasons from 2011-15. He went 342-331 with the Brewers, with his best season coming in 2011 when he led the Brew Crew to a 96-66 record, first-place in the National League Central and Game 6 of the NLCS.

Prior to his time in Milwaukee, Roenicke was a member of the Los Angeles Angels’ coaching staff from 2000-10.
