Washington Nationals’ ace Max Scherzer will not pitch Game 5 tonight against the Houston Astros due to neck and back spasms. Joe Ross will toe the rubber in his place.

Scherzer, 35, has pitched in five games this postseason, logging wins in the NLDS, NLCS and one in the World Series.

Overall on the season, Scherzer logged a 2.92 ERA, 2.45 FIP, 12.7 K/9 and 1.027 WHIP in 27 games started.

The right-hander is signed through 2022.

Ross, 26, has pitched two innings in relief this postseason, all of which came in the World Series. On the season, Ross pitched in 27 games (nine started), and registered a 5.48 ERA in 64.0 innings pitched.
