First reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Cardinals and newly acquired slugger Paul Goldschmidt are nearing terms on a contract extension to keep the perennial All-Star in St. Louis for the next five seasons.

Goldschmidt was acquired by the Cardinals from Arizona earlier this winter for a package of prospects.

Rosenthal’s report was confirmed by Derrick Goold of St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Goold notes that the extension will pay Goldschmidt $130 million over the five years.

Goldschmidt, 31, had spent the first eight seasons of his career in Arizona, going to two postseasons with the club, and finishing second in MVP voting twice. “Goldy” has made six straight All-Star games, won four silver sluggers, three gold gloves, and has placed in MVP voting five times (2, 2, 3, 6, 11).

He is a career .297/.398/.532 hitter with 209 career home runs and 710 RBIs. Not to mention, his OPS+ for his career is an absurd 145 and he is the owner of a career OPS of .930.

The annual breakdown of money in the contract is unknown. Goldschmidt was set to hit the open market this winter. He is now under contract through 2024.
