Shortened season or not, Major League Baseball has some end-of-year awards to hand out.

Monday night on MLB Network, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced their finalists for Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Cy Young Award, and Most Valuable Player award ahead of next week’s voting announcements.

Cy Young Award

It’s going to be an uphill climb, but Jake is still in the running for a three-peat.

Two-time reigning National League Cy Young Award winner and New York Mets superstar Jacob deGrom (4-2, 2.38 ERA, 2.26 FIP, 104 K, 18 BB, 2.6 fWAR; 68 IP) was named a finalist in the NL, along with Trevor Bauer of the Cincinnati Reds (5-4, 1.73 ERA, 2.88 FIP, 100 K, 17 BB, 2.5 fWAR; 73 IP) and Chicago Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish (8-3, 2.01 ERA, 2.23 FIP, 93 K, 14 BB, 3.0 fWAR; 76 IP).

In the American League, Cleveland righty Shane Bieber (8-1, 1.63 ERA, 2.07 FIP, 122 K, 21 BB, 3.2 fWAR; 77.1 IP), Twins right-hander Kenta Maeda (6-1, 2.70 ERA, 3.00 FIP, 80 K, 10 BB, 2.1 fWAR; 66.2 IP), and Blue Jays southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu (5-2, 2.69 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 72 K, 17 BB, 1.9 fWAR; 67 IP) were honored as finalists.

Most Valuable Player

A player Mets fans have no choice but to respect is finally getting his due.

In the NL, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman (.341/.462/.640, 13 HR, 53 RBIs, 187 wRC+, 3.4 fWAR; 262 PA), Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts (.292/.366/.562, 16 HR, 39 RBIs, 149 wRC+, 3.0 fWAR; 246 PA), and Padres’ third baseman Manny Machado (.304/.370/.580, 16 HR, 47 RBIs, 148 wRC+, 2.6 fWAR; 254 PA).

For the first time since 2017 (finished fourth with just 114 games played) and just the second time in his 10-year MLB career, Angels slugger Mike Trout will not finish in the top-three of AL MVP voting.

Cleveland slugger Jose Ramirez (.292/.386/.607, 17 HR, 46 RBIs, 163 wRC+, 3.4 fWAR; 254 PA), Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (.364/.421/.590, 10 HR, 27 RBIs, 177 wRC+, 2.5 fWAR; 216 PA), and White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu (.317/.370/.617, 19 HR, 60 RBIs, 167 wRC+, 2.6 fWAR) all received nods in the AL.

Rookie of the Year

Despite first-year players not garnering a ton of playing time in some cases, there were certainly some standouts.

In the NL, Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm (.338/.400/.481, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 138 wRC+, 1.2 fWAR; 180 PA), Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth (.285/.354/.477, 4 HR, 26 RBIs, 125 wRC+, 1.4 fWAR; 192 PA), and Brewers right-hander — also the owner of the vaunted Airbender changeupDevin Williams (0.33 ERA, 0.86 FIP, 17.67 K/9, 1.4 fWAR; 22 appearances, 27 IP) were named finalists.

A couple of centerfielders were tabbed in the White Sox’ Luis Robert (.233/.302/.436, 11 HR, 31 RBIs, 101 wRC+, 1.4 fWAR; 227 PA, and Seattle’s Kyle Lewis (.262/.364/.437, 11 HR, 28 RBIs, 126 wRC+, 1.7 fWAR; 242 PA), as well as Astros right-hander Cristian Javier (3.48 ERA, 4.94 FIP, 54 K, 18 BB, 54.1 IP) in AL voting.

Manager of the Year

Kevin Cash of the AL Champion Tampa Bay Rays was named as a finalist for AL Manager of the Year, and Charlie Montoyo, who led the Blue Jays to an unexpected postseason berth, and Rick Renteria, recently jettisoned White Sox manager who did the same, received the honor as well.

In the NL, Marlins skipper Don Mattingly, who took Miami from an expected last-place finish to a six-seed in the postseason, and a couple of first-year managers — the Cubs’ David Ross and the Padres’ Jayce Tingler — were nominated.

Final voting announcements for all four awards will take place Monday through Thursday next week on MLB Network (link above).
