Mickey Callaway was hired by the New York Mets this offseason without any managerial experience in the major or minor leagues. But so far, so good after the New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in a resounding 9-4 Opening Day victory on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

There were a few things that stood out in his first official lineup, with Yoenis Cespedes batting second and Amed Rosario ninth. Both of those worked out for Callaway with Cespedes knocking in three with two hits and Rosario on base four times in the game.

“Yeah, I mean, it took all of spring training to try to figure that one out,” Callaway said about today’s lineup. “I don’t have that much time on the next one, but, you know, I just wanted to make sure that guys were in a good position to succeed. And we wanted to just make sure that we had thought everything out when we set that lineup. And we’ll try to do that every single time.”

As a team, the Mets scored nine runs without a home run and scored seven of their runs with two outs. Callaway was impressed with the lineup doing the little things to score, “We had a great approach today against a great pitcher…We stuck with out approach and didn’t do too much. If you can make the other team’s starter throw a ton of pitches like we did tonight, you’re going to have success.”

The Mets knocked out Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez after only 4.1 innings, making him throw 90 pitches in that span including six walks.

Callaway became the first Mets manager to win in his managerial debut in New York since Jeff Torborg did it in 1992.
