New York Mets outfielder, Michael Conforto was given a rare opportunity to start Friday night. He made the best of that opportunity.

Conforto was 2-for-3 on the night, including a three-run homer that helped break the game open for the Mets. The homer was his first since August 7.

“That at-bat really is kind of the epitome of what I’ve been working on, laying off of pitches that are tough for me to hit until I get something that I can do damage with,” Conforto said. “That was a good at-bat for me and a feeling that I can hold on to.” (Newsday)

The three RBI matched a career high for Conforto. His last three-RBI game came June 8 at Pittsburgh. It was a much needed night for the Mets’ 23-year-old outfielder who has struggled in his sophomore season.

Overall on the season he has hit to a .222/.310/.420 slash line with 12 homers and 39 RBI. Things though have been turning around as over the last seven games he has hit to a .385/.467/.692 slash line with one homer and five RBI.

It will be interesting to see if Conforto continues to gets chances as Jay Bruce has continued to ride the bench. Michael may be getting hot again at just the right time for this team and himself.

The team’s win Friday night combined with losses of the Giants and Cardinals catapulted the Mets to the top Wild Card spot. The Mets now hold a one game lead over the Giants, while holding a game and a half lead on the Cardinals.
