Michael Conforto made his return to the field on Thursday afternoon against the Washington Nationals. The New York Mets outfielder was activated earlier in the day as he came back from shoulder surgery.

Conforto said he was ready to play and wanted to face Stephen Strasburg. After two at-bats it looked Conforto wasn’t ready for Strasburg with a strikeout on three pitches and hitting into a 5-4-3 double play.

Then in his third attempt, the powerful lefty hitter showed that his shoulder is just fine hitting a 97 mph fastball over the left field fence for a two-run homer that gave the Mets a 4-2 lead.

Conforto finished his 2018 debut going 1-for-4 with the home run, walk and scored two runs. He also played nine innings of defense in center field which sent Brandon Nimmo, who doubled in his only at-bat, to the bench.

Jay Bruce hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam and Yoenis Cespedes homered as well to round out the impressive performance from the Mets starting outfield.
