Here are the 2011 Metsmerized April Players of the Month…

Hitter of the Month

Ike Davis

Ike Davis has been the Mets most dynamic player so far this season, and is my pick for Metsmerized Hitter of the Month in April. His career high 11-game hitting streak came to an end yesterday in which he batted .462 (18-39) with five doubles, four home runs and nine RBIs. Davis is tied for ninth in the National League with 20 RBI, 12th with a .337 batting average, sixth with eight doubles and ninth with a .600 slugging percentage. Davis also had another streak which got very little attention and had scored a run in eight straight games, the longest streak of his career and the longest in the majors this season.

He leads the team in every power category and is quickly becoming the offensive juggernaut of the Mets. The most remarkable part of what he has accomplished is that these numbers were produced by batting sixth in the lineup. A little higher in the order and we could be looking at the league leader in RBIs in the National League. Imagine what he can do if Beltran or Bay were protecting him instead of Jason Pridie and Josh Thole. Congratulations Ike!

Runner Up: Jose Reyes

Pitcher of the Month

Pedro Beato

I was one of those who questioned the wisdom of giving a roster spot to Rule 5 Pick Pedro Beato who we selected from the Baltimore Orioles. (What in the world were the O’s thinking?) I thought it was too risky to expect Beato to make the jump from Double-A to the Majors without some disastrous results. I was wrong. Dead wrong. Beato has been a godsend for our bullpen and easily nails down the Metsmerized Pitcher of the Month for April. Honestly, it wasn’t even close which doesn’t say much for the rest of our pitching staff.

Beato has thrown 14.0 innings over 10 major league outings without allowing an earned run this season. He collected his first major league win on April 27 against the Washington Nationals after tossing a perfect inning. Remarkably, lefties are 3-20 (.150) off him which surpasses the performance of our left-handed specialist Tim Byrdak by more than 40 points. As they say in his hometown of Brooklyn, fuhgeddaboutit… Tip your hat to Pedro Beato for a job well done! Nice going, kid!
