So last’s week POTW caused a bit of a stir, much to my amusement, and It’s good to see how many people pay attention to my choice for the week. But outside of baseball, today is a great day for Americans. Although the Mets pulled off an extra innings victory last night, America won as well – with the death of Osama Bin Laden. I am sure I do not need to tell you what this means for America. Justice has finally been served and everyone is walking with a little more pep in their step today as we resume our normal lives. So back to baseball it is for me…

My choice for MetsMerized Player of The Week is…Pedro Beato and Ike Davis!

I found it really hard to compare a pitcher and an offensive player so I decided to give it to them both this week. Last week, I got killed for not giving Ike the award because I thought Wright was showing flashes of breaking out of his slump. Wright went on to bat .231 on the week and lead the team in K’s with 8. Thanks for backing me up there, David. I still hope he breaks out of that slump because when all the middle of the Mets lineup hitters are hot, that lineup is pretty dangerous.

Ike Davis has been tearing it up for the better part of two weeks, and if you were to take away last night’s 0-6, Ike would have been 8-19 (.421) but instead he still posted a robust .320 on the week. He doubled twice, drilled a HR and drove home two runs. His overall slash line was .320/.370/.520. He led the Mets in runs scored (5), Hits (8), and Total Bases (13).

Pedro Beato is really starting to impress me and I think he deserved major credit for last week – where he did not allow an ER at all. His stat line for the week was as follows: 6.0 IP, R (Unearned), 3 H, BB, 2 K. One walk in 6 IP and only 3 H. That’s a WHIP of .067. Include the fact that his last 3.0 IP were against the Phillies in their own ballpark where a single run would have lost us the game, and he came through for us. Of course, this is nothing new for Beato, who has now pitched 17.0 innings without an ER – and he’s held opposing hitters to a .167 average and posted a .071 WHIP.

Congratulations to both Pedro Beato and Ike Davis – who also received the honors for POTM for April! Wonder if they read this.

Runners up:

Daniel Murphy: .286/.318/.524 (6 – 21, 2 2B, HR) 3 RBI, 11 TB, 3 R.

Chris Young: 2 ND: 11.2 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 5 BB, 10 K.

Past Award Winners:

One-Hit Wonders: Chris Young, David Wright*

Of Note:

Through the first month of the year, Ike Davis leads the Mets in: BA, OBP, SLG, RBI, OPS, OPS+, wOBA, WPA, ISO and, yes, BABIP. (Andy McCullough)

Chris Young likes pitching against the Phillies.

Everyone will remember last night’s game because of the death of Osama. Good thing we won. I hear the Phillies weren’t concerned about the death, all jokes aside. … Uh.

Giants and Dodgers this week on a homestand. I expect Beltran to have a nice series at Citi Field, where he’s batting over .300. We’re looking at about 3-3 or 4-2. Hopefully we can do the latter and win both series. LGM…and USA!
