The New York Mets (37-19) were looking for a series split against the Los Angeles Dodgers (35-19) at Dodgers Stadium Sunday after the offense exploded last night. In a game consisting of several different vital tuning points and lead changes, the Mets emerged victorious in 10 innings, 5-4.

The Dodgers got on the board in the first inning. Freddie Freeman was credited with a double after a ball that was hit toward Mark Canha was misplayed and got passed him. Trea Turner then blasted a two-run home run on the very next pitch off Trevor Williams.

The Mets tried to answer as they loaded the bases in the top of the second inning on Julio Urias. However, Brandon Nimmo flew out to center field and the Dodgers retained a 2-0 lead.

The Mets were finally able to get on the board in the thing inning. Starling Marte took a 84-MPH changeup 391 feet to right-center field. The solo shot cut the Dodgers’ 2-0 lead in half.

Williams day came to an end after five strong innings. He ended it with an exclamation point in getting Trea Turner swinging with two men on for his fifth strikeout of the day. Overall, despite one hiccup – the two-run home run – Williams was strong once again.

In the eighth inning the Mets were able to snag the lead for the first time in the game. Francisco Lindor led off with a double, then Pete Alonso continued his terrific stretch with a double of his own driving in Lindor to tie the game.

J.D. Davis did a nice job advancing Alonso to third. Eduardo Escobar turned in a terrific 10-pitch at-bat that resulted in a deep fly ball that drove in Alonso to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

The scoring in the inning did not stop there. After Luis Guillorme was walked, Tomás Nido registered a clutch two-strike, two-out hit to give the Mets a two-run lead.

Adam Ottavino and Stephen Nogosek turned in scoreless sixth and seventh innings prior to the Mets scoring in the eighth. Buck Showalter opted to pitch his closer, Edwin Díaz, in the bottom of the eighth with 1-2-3 of the lethal Dodgers’ order coming to the plate.

Díaz got Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to fly out. Then Trea Turner looking at a beautiful slider that backed up onto the inside corner of the plate for strike three. Showalter then opted to go with Seth Lugo for the ninth.

Lugo gave up a lead-off home run to Will Smith. He then allowed two, two-out hits which resulted in a tie game. The last coming after he worked the count to 0-2 against Chris Taylor.

In extra innings, J.D. Davis ripped a 108.6-MPH line drive to left field that Taylor booted. It not only bought Alonso in to score, but Davis to advance to second base. However, Canha struck out, and Escobar flared out which resulted in Davis getting doubled up.

Adonis Medina was entrusted to try to close the game in the 10th inning. He got the job done and went through the top of Dodgers’ lineup to do so. An astronomically big first career save for the 25-year-old.

Adonis Medina got the final three outs of the ballgame in the 10th inning. He came through as he went through the top of the Dodgers’ order. He got Betts, Freeman, and Smith to earn himself a save. It was his first career save and clinched a series split for the Mets against an elite Dodgers team.

On Deck

The Mets will continue their tough road trip with a visit to San Diego (33-21) starting tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 P.M. at Petco Park for game one of the three-game set. Carlos Carrasco (3.63 ERA) versus Blake Snell (4.80 ERA) of the Padres is the projected pitching matchup.
