One of the most anticipated nights of the Mets 2021 season is just two weeks away.

After much speculation as to when the Mets would bring back their iconic black uniforms, the team announced today that Nike-made black jerseys will make a return on Friday, July 30 in their home game versus Cincinnati.

In celebration of the return, the first 12,000 fans in attendance July 30 will receive a black Francisco Lindor Mets t-shirt.

A staple of the Mets uniform for the late 90’s, 2000’s and early 2010’s, the black jerseys have been on Steve Cohen’s to-do-list ever since taking over as team owner this season.

As the season winds down and the Mets continue to play winning baseball, expect Citi Field to be packed. Bringing back the black jerseys, which will be worn all Friday nights after July 30 for the remainder of the regular season, is yet another reason to attract fans to the ballpark during an expected pennant run.

The Mets official press release noted that the team has not worn a home black jersey since July 21, 2012, making it almost exactly nine years to the day that the team will once again don these fan favorite jerseys.

With a 3.5 game lead in the NL East, the Mets are hoping to win their first division title since 2015’s pennant-winning season. When the Mets won clinched their last division title prior to 2015 (2006), the team sported the black jerseys in their division-clinching win over St. Louis on September 18, 2006.

Soon after the Mets made today’s jersey announcement, Pete Alonso posted a (very well edited) image of him donning the black jersey on his Instagram.
