Marc Carig asked a team official if the New York Mets would consider non-tendering the struggling Matt Harvey, the response “no way.”

After his latest bad outing on Wednesday in which he lasted only 3.1 innings, Harvey is 5-5 with a 6.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6.08 FIP. In 80.1 this year he has allowed 87 hits, 40 walks and struck out only 60 batters.

The big struggle for Harvey was been lack of control and put-away stuff resulting in a 1.50 K/BB, which is tied for the fifth worst among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched.

Velocity has been down in 2017 for Harvey too, averaging only 94 MPH on his fastball and he’s down to 93.66 MPH in September after averaging 95.28 MPH in May according to Brooks Baseball.

Harvey will be arbitration eligible this offseason for the third and final time after making $5,125,000 this season.

Despite the injuries and under performance he would likely be looking at a salary around $6 million for the 2018 season. The six million dollar figure makes him a worthwhile gamble considering his upside and the Mets lack of starting pitching depth.

Harvey becomes a free agent after the 2018 season and will be interesting to see if he can have a bounce back season in his walk year.
