As per Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Mets plan on recalling first-baseman-turned-left-fielder, Dominic Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.

Smith, 23, has spent the bulk of the 2018 season with the 51’s and since his last option back to Triple-A (July 20), has spent the majority of his time playing left field.

Drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft (eleventh overall), Smith has a .296/.361/.427 slash line in 617 MiLB games played, with 46 home runs, 354 runs batted in, and 156 doubles.

The Los Angeles native has hit just .193/.249/.374 through 77 games at the major league level while mostly playing first base.

At just 23-years-old and rapidly approaching a critical point in his development, the team began using Smith in the outfield this season.

Las Vegas’ Peter Alonso (.314/.440/.573, 15 HR, 52 RBI in 65 games at first base with Vegas) has apparently moved ahead of Smith on the organization’s depth chart.

Now the Mets must figure out whether Smith will continue to be a part of their plans over the next few years, and at what position he will do so. Smith is arbitration eligible through the 2023 season.
