Game Notes

Shaun Marcum tossed eight scoreless innings and earned his first Mets win after an 0-9 start and the Amazin’s beat the White Sox, 3-0, Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field for a split of their two-game series.

Jeremy Hefner (2-6, 3.89 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Rockies, and he’ll be looking to claim his second straight win. Hefner hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs since May 29. He has pitched only one inning in his career against Colorado, and he gave up two earned runs in that outing — which came in relief — back on April 18.

Eric Young Jr. went 3-for-4 with one-RBI on Wednesday and is hitting .414 (12-for-29) with six RBIs in seven games with the Mets.

Terry Collins told reporters on Wednesday that third baseman David Wright will be given the day off on Thursday. He has been out of the starting lineup in only one other game this season.

Closer Bobby Parnell has only allowed one hit in his last six appearances, spanning 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

Ruben Tejada should begin a rehab assignment later this week in the Gulf Coast League, and also will make a stop at Las Vegas before being activated from the DL.

Game Preview

Fresh off a two game split with the White Sox, the Mets are heading to Colorado for a make up game. If you recall, the Mets had a large amount of outdoor games in early April in the MLB snowbelt and they a good amount of games got cancelled and moved around in Minnesota and Colorado, so the Mets are going to finish off the Colorado game today. Yesterday Marcum had a bounce back performance going 8 shutout innings leading the Mets to victory, something Jeremy Hefner will try to replicate today against Tyler Chatwood.

Jeremy Hefner is 2-6 over 81.0 innings with a 3.89 ERA. In the month of June, Hefner has made four starts with a 1.88 ERA over 24.0 innings while striking out 20 batters. He pitched in relief in a game in Colorado earlier this year allowing 2 ER over one inning, but this was before Hefner was really starting to deal like he has of late. The Rockies have the following numbers against Hefner:

Fowler 1-1, HR
Gonzalez 0-1
Helton 0-1
Rosario 0-1

Tyler Chatwood is 4-1 on the season over 8 starts while pitching 44.2 innings with a 2.22 ERA. He’s 1-1 over his last 3 starts with a 2.40 ERA. Last year he pitched 3.0 innings against the Mets where he allowed 0 runs, 3 hits and 3 BB’s. The Mets have the following numbers against Chatwood:

Murphy 0-5
Valdespin 1-1
Wright 1-2
