The New York Mets (33-35) and St. Louis Cardinals (34-33) had their game suspended in the ninth inning on Thursday night after the Cards scored two runs to tie the rain-soaked contest at 4-4 before the tarps covered the field. It was the fourth blown save of the season for Edwin Diaz, and an MLB-leading 15 blown saves for the Mets.

The two teams resumed play on Friday at Citi Field and lost in the 10th inning by a score of 5-4.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom took the hill for the Mets on Thursday night and started off very strong as he got Matt Carpenter to fly out, Paul DeJong to pop-out to first base, and got Paul Goldschmidt to ground out to shortstop for a 1-2-3 first inning.

In the second inning, deGrom would record his first strikeout of the night with Marcell Ozuna being the casualty on a 2-2 slider. Jose Martinez and Yadier Molina would join the club on a combined total of eight pitches between them to keep deGrom’s pitch count at a superb 22 pitches.

After retiring Kolten Wong on a groundout, deGrom would allow Harrison Bader to record the first hit of the game on a double down the right-field line. Bader would proceed to steal third base with Flaherty at the plate, who would strike out, leaving Bader at third base with two outs for Carpenter.

The first run would score on a soft infield single from Carpenter that would roll between Frazier and Rosario. DeJong would ground out to Frazier on the next pitch to end the inning, with the Mets trailing 1-0.

DeGrom would allow Ozuna to get on first with a single in the fourth, but he would head back to the bench along with Martinez quickly as Pete Alonso would start a 3-6-3 double play to end the inning with the Mets on top 2-1.

Harrison Bader recorded a two-out single off deGrom in the top of the fifth inning, but after stealing a base, he would watch Flaherty hit a fly ball to Dominic Smith to end the inning. DeGrom recorded his fifth strikeout of the game on three pitches to Molina, who struck out in his first at-bat of the game as well.

The sixth inning would not be friendly to deGrom as Mets-killer, Paul DeJong would tie the game on a solo home run to left-center field. The good part of the inning, though, was that deGrom became the eighth Mets’ pitcher ever to record 1,100 strikeouts, with Matt Carpenter being the Cardinals’ hitter that was part of history.

Jacob deGrom would complete his strong outing in the seventh outing despite allowing a one-out single to Yadier Molina. He did so by getting Wong to ground into a force play and striking out Bader.

In total, he pitched seven innings while allowing two runs, six hits, and no walks. He struck out eight batters in the game as well and his outing forced him to throw 116 pitches (80 strikes).

Seth Lugo came in for the eighth inning and after getting pinch-hitter Dexter Fowler to ground out, hit Carpenter on a 2-1 pitch. He managed to escape trouble as he got DeJong to fly out to Juan Lagares, who entered the game by way of a double-switch, and then struck out Goldschmidt after a grueling nine-pitch at-bat.

Edwin Diaz came in for the ninth inning and after the umpires debated entering into a long rain-delay, they decided not to in the end. Things didn’t get off to a great start for Diaz as he walked Ozuna. Diaz did manage to get Martinez to hit a slow grounder to third in the next at-bat, which Frazier decided to play it safe on and throw to first base to record the first out of the inning.

The Mets’ closer then struck out Molina for the third time of the night, leaving the team with only one out to go with Wong representing the potential tying run. Wong, though, drove in Ozuna on an RBI single that hit the top of the wall to shrink the Mets’ lead to 4-3.

Diaz then proceeded to allow an RBI double to Bader to tie the game at 4-4. However, he didn’t have to face another batter as Bader got caught in between second and third base trying to advance.

The right-hander pitched the 10th inning of the game on Friday and allowed a bloop single to center field by Yairo Munoz. After stealing a base and a Matt Carpenter ground out, Munoz would find his way to third base.

DeJong once again killed the Mets in the next at-bat when he singled to left field to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead. He received the loss.

Hitting

On the offensive side of things, Jeff McNeil swung at the very first pitch by Cardinals’ starter Jack Flaherty that carried deep to left field, but was ultimately caught by Marcell Ozuna on a leaping grab. However, Flaherty would manage to strikeout both Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso to retire the side on 11 pitches.

Todd Frazier became the first baserunner of the game in the second inning with a one-out walk. Despite that, the Mets would do nothing with him on first base as Wilson Ramos would hit a pop-up to Paul Goldschmidt and Amed Rosario would strike out on three pitches to end the inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, McNeil would record the Mets’ first hit of the night on a single to Jose Martinez in right field. Two pitches later, Conforto would hit a deep fly ball to right-center field that would go over the wall to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. That was his 13th of the season.

Pete Alonso would single in the next at-bat and Dominic Smith would hit another bullet to right-center field. This ball, though, remained in play and Bader caught it for the third out of the inning.

After deGrom gave up the lead in the top of the sixth inning, Pete Alonso hit a one-out double followed by an RBI single from Dominic Smith that dropped in front of Bader to give the Mets a new lead of 3-2.

The Mets continued to hit as Frazier hit a bloop-single to allow Smith to advance to third followed by a Ramos walk to load the bases. Those were the final two batters for Flaherty as he was pulled in favor of Giovanny Gallegos.

Amed Rosario would hit a bullet to center field on the second pitch of the next at-bat that would score Smith to give the Mets a 4-2 lead, but would result in a double play as Frazier would attempt advance to third base on a bad throw from Bader.
