The Mets’ Triple-A affiliate will be much closer to Citi Field next season, and it could stay that way for the better part of the next two decades.
New York announced late last year that their highest minor league team would be located in Syracuse in 2019. The current lease runs through 2025, but according to Onondaga County deputy executive Bill Fisher, there has been a verbal agreement between the Mets any Syracuse to keep the affiliation there through 2043.
The agreement is contingent on the county closing a deal to make roughly $25 million in improvements to the ballpark.
In 2018, the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate finished their last season in Syracuse despite the Mets technically running the team. In 2019, New York will finally have its own players on the field.
This will be much more convenient for New York, whose Triple-A team the last five years has been located across the country in Las Vegas.
While nothing is official on keeping the team in Syracuse until 2043, New York and the county are working towards it.
