San Diego Padres v Oakland Athletics

The Mets have announced they have acquired OF Collin Cowgill from the A’s in exchange for Minor League infielder Jefry Marte.

Cowgill, 26, was part of the package that went from Arizona to Oakland in last offseason’s Trevor Cahill deal.

After a solid season at Triple-A in 2011, he slumped this season with Triple-A Sacramento batting .254 with four home runs and 37 RBI in 61 games. After being called up to the A’s, he batted .269 with a home run and nine RBI in 38 games. He owns a .255/.319/.311 batting line through 216 plate appearances in the big leagues.

He’s capable of playing all three outfield spots and hits right-handed, so Cowgill has a good chance to fill a bench role for the Mets or perhaps work his way into a platoon.

Marte, 22, batted .251 with a .687 OPS in 129 games at Double-A. With David Wright now signed for eight years, the young third baseman became expendable.
