According to MLB.com, the New York Mets announced today that they have signed shortstop Reese Havens and right handed pitcher Brad Holt and assigned both to Single-A Brooklyn of the New York-Penn League.
Havens was the club’s 22nd overall selection in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball’s First Year Player Draft from the University of South Carolina while Holt was the 33rd overall pick in the first round compensation round from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
During last night’s SNY broadcast of the Mets/Rangers game, Kevin Burkardt joined both of them during the game and from what I could hear, they were both obviously thrilled. Havens said he was prepared to play wherever the Mets wanted him to when he was asked about him and Jose Reyes both being shortstops.
Hopefully the Mets will soon get first baseman Ike Davis, their top overall pick, to sign on the dotted line as well. All three are expected to advance through the minor leagues very quickly. From all reports, everyone seems to be high on the Mets top picks.
We’ll be able to see each of them starring for the Brooklyn Cyclones once their season gets underway.
