It appears as though the New York Mets are far from done this offseason as they look to add another bat and a reliever, per MMO’s very own Michael Mayer.

According to Mayer, the Mets are still looking to bolster and upgrade their roster despite shocking the baseball world in the early hours of Wednesday morning by signing shortstop Carlos Correa to a 12-year, $315 million deal, pending a medical. He will play third base for the Mets.

Correa’s addition was the culmination of a shocking turn of events. The star shortstop saw his introductory press conference with the San Francisco Giants postponed on Tuesday due to a “difference of opinion” on the medical between the Giants and Correa’s camp, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

Heyman was then first to the news that the Mets had swooped in to sign Correa after his deal fell through with the Giants. It meant that owner Steve Cohen finally got his man after launching an 11th hour attempt to sign the superstar free agent before he agreed to terms with the Giants.

However, as big as the Correa signing is and as much as he significantly improves this lineup, it does appear as though the Mets still want to improve their roster for the 2023 season, per Mayer’s report. It was reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic earlier this month that Cohen wanted to add another big bat to the lineup, and upgrading at the designated hitter position could still be a possibility.

It was also reported by Mayer on Tuesday that the Mets have contacted the Chicago White Sox about All-Star reliever Liam Hendriks. SNY’s Andy Martino also reported that the White Sox are actively shopping Hendriks, who has one-year remaining on a three-year deal he signed with Chicago in 2021. He also has a $5 million club option for the 2024 season.

Hendriks has been one of the best relievers in baseball for a substantial amount of time now, and he’s a true master of his craft. If he were to be traded to the Mets, he would form a three-headed monster in the bullpen with Edwin Díaz and David Robertson and would also help to ease the pressure on Diaz given his track record of coming up clutch in high leverage situations.

It is worth noting that multiple reports have suggested the Mets are aggressively shopping catcher James McCann and veteran starter Carlos Carrasco, so those are two names worth keeping an eye on should the front office be successful in adding another bat and another reliever this offseason. It could be that McCann or Carrasco, or both, could be part of any deal to acquire a target like Hendriks in a potential trade down the road.

Despite the fact that the Mets have now committed $806.1 million to free agents since free agency began this winter, it seems ownership and the front office refuse to slow down in their pursuit of transforming this team into one that can legitimately compete for the World Series in 2023 and beyond. It has already been a transcendent offseason for this organization, but it appears that they are far from done and more significant moves could be on the way soon.
