Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the New York Mets are planning on starting phone interviews with potential candidates for the next team’s manager after firing Mickey Callaway last week.

From there, the team plans to schedule sit-down interviews with some of the top candidates. One name already set to meet with the team in-person is Joe Girardi, who many have deemed as the front-runner for the position.

According to Heyman, the team is prioritizing National League and New York experience, both of which Girardi has as a former manager of the then-Florida Marlins (2006) and New York Yankees (2008-2017).

However, the relatability issue could be one that stands in the way of Girardi getting hired as the Yankees’ front office and players both reportedly had complaints about the manager towards the end of his tenure.

Joe Espada, Luis Rojas, Dusty Baker, Buck Showalter, and Carlos Beltran are other names that have been mentioned as candidates for the Mets’ managerial job for the 2020 season.
