The Mets snapped their two-game winning streak and lost to the Miami Marlins by the score of 3-2 tonight at Marlins Park.
Jenrry Mejia started and while he wasn’t nearly as sharp as his debut last week against the Washington Nationals, he delivered a quality start surrendering three runs in six innings. He allowed just five hits including a homer to Jake Marisnick, walked one and struck out four. Two of the runs scored were on back to back sacrifice flies.
The bullpen got a solid effort from Scott Rice and Carlos Torres who each pitched a scoreless innings.
Offensively, the Mets were flat and wasted many scoring opportunities. They had at least one runner on base every inning after the first, including two men on with no outs in the second, but they ended up batting 1-7 with RISP and hit into 3 rally-killing double-plays. Ouch…
Marlon Byrd, who ended up staying with the Mets despite swirling trade rumors, had a nice game going 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Ike Davis keeps producing and went 2-3 with an RBI single in the sixth. He has looked much better at the plate lately.
*** David Wright stole a base and seemed to grab his right hamstring, but remained in the game after a visit by the trainer.
So the Mets finish the month of July with a respectable 15-12 record, their first winning month of the season. Tomorrow, they conclude the four-game set with Matt Harvey (8-2, 2.11 ERA) opposing righthander Tom Koehler (2-6, 4.67) at 12:40 PM.
