As per a report from James Wagner of the New York Times, the New York Mets — sans general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, naturally — met with the representatives of reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas on Tuesday, presumably to discuss a contract extension.

DeGrom, 30, was unquestionably the best pitcher in baseball last season, owning an MLB-leading 1.70 earned-run average and 1.99 fielding independent pitching rating, with 269 strikeouts, 46 bases-on-balls, 0.912 WHIP, a league-leading 216 ERA+ rating, and allowed a microscopic 0.41 home runs per nine innings.

Through his first five MLB seasons, all with the Mets, the Florida native has a 2.67 ERA, 2.81 FIP, 1.072 WHIP, a 4.50 strikeouts-to-walks ratio (including exactly 1,000 strikeouts for his career) in 139 career starts.

Earlier this month on WFAN, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon told Mike Francesa that the organization would “like to see him stay here long-term” adding that he was “sure there will be an offer” extended to the Mets’ undisputed ace.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
